Ask a hundred folks to explain what No First Use (NFU) means and you might get a hundred different answers. Of course it refers to the pledge or policy of a nuclear power to not be the first to use nuclear weapons in any non-nuclear conflict. Alas, only 2 of the 9 nuclear powers, China (1964) and India (1998) have made that critical pledge needed to ensure nuclear war never occurs. The U.S. violated No First Use when they incinerated 2 Japanese cities tho on the cusp of victory near the end of WWII. Seventy-six years on the U.S. still won’t take the pledge.

The West Suburban Peace Coalition will feature the campaign to make No First Use the policy of all 9 powers and any who may join in the future. Our speaker will be David Borris, a Chicago based peace and social activist who serves as Board president of Chicago Area Peace Action (CAPA), the Illinois affiliate of the largest grassroots peace and justice organization in the country. CAPA focuses its work on the interconnections of climate disruption, runaway defense spending, and foreign policy through a lens of equity and justice, both nationally and internationally. CAPA has been working in conjunction with The Union of Concerned Scientists, Wisconsin and Michigan Peace Action affiliates and others on a No First Use campaign.

Speaker: David Borris, peace activist involved in the No First Use campaign
