Chapel Hill Climate Strike

Start: Friday, December 06, 2019 9:30 AM

End: Friday, December 06, 201911:00 AM

STRIKE IN CHAPEL HILL AT 9:30; CARPOOLS WILL HEAD TO THE DURHAM STRIKE @11:30

Millions of people will be striking nationwide to demand a Green New Deal, the last chance for our generation to have a livable future. Young people make up the largest voting bloc in American history, and it's time our politicians listen to us. Strike with us to show the fossil fuel billionaires and corrupt politicians that it's time to put the wellbeing of all people over the profits of a wealthy few. We'll meet at Peace and Justice Plaza @9:30 to hear from some speakers and carpool to the strike in Durham @11:30.

List of Demands for the Strike :
- The US rapidly implement the Green New Deal, the Energy and Carbon Innovation Act, and other large scale climate policies that will provide jobs for people that most need it and work to build an economically and environmentally viable future
- Chapel Hill City Council, Carrboro City Council, and UNC Chapel Hill publicly declare support for the Green New Deal and H.R. 763
- UNC Chapel Hill increase transparency on their sustainability and facilities programs. We in the Chapel Hill community are directly affected by their actions like the operation of the co-generation plant on Cameron Ave, but have no way of knowing what they are doing to make the plant renewable and protect our futures.
- To rapidly make the wide scale energy infrastructure investments needed to become carbon neutral and fulfill their mission of preparing the "next generation of leaders", UNC Chapel Hill needs to make sustainability a core factor in decision making at every level and reallocate money and other resources to allow facilities to more rapidly achieve their goals
- UNC Chapel Hill use Environmental Social Governance for all of their investments
- Chapel Hill Strikers also ally with the demands of the US Youth Climate Strike Coalition found here: https://strikewithus.org/#demands

Afterwards, we will be headed to Durham Central Park to join the larger Durham Climate Strike. If you need a ride from Chapel Hill to the Durham Strike, sign up for our carpool here and we will find you a ride: https://forms.gle/no74XtNxg6ia1Acd8
