Climate Strike + Caroling for Climate Action in Lewisburg!
Start: Friday, December 06, 2019•10:00 AM
With the consequences of the climate crisis becoming ever more clear, a new powerful wave of the climate movement is swelling. Young people around the world have been going on strike – every week, all over the planet – for months. In the September Climate Strikes alone, 7.6 million people took to the streets. In Lewisburg, more than 600 came out in the largest climate demonstration in local history.
Now, we are preparing for the next wave of Climate Strikes and ramping up pressure on local leaders. We asked for action at the University and in Lewisburg in September and we have seen some forward progress. The President announced the plan to reforest the campus front lawn is moving forward; the Borough is starting to draft a climate action plan. This is great! But both the University and Lewisburg will need to act more boldly and more quickly to ensure clean air, clean water, and good jobs for young people.
RALLY + CAROLING FOR CLIMATE ACTION: We will gather on the campus front lawn to celebrate the plan to reforest a green carpet into a landscape rich with biodiversity and carbon-sequestering trees. After a brief rally, we will march around campus while singing for climate action, sharing our need for justice and a livable future by singing powerful songs together. We will have 'caroling captains' leading the way with lyric sheets and motivation! These won't be holiday tunes -- but songs drawn from the history of struggles for social justice.
This event is a strike, not a walkout. We are asking folks to not report to school or work on Dec 6th (if on campus or in Lewisburg, specifically between 10am and 12:30pm). When we withhold our labor in this way, we send a powerful message that business-as-usual won't cut it
Please come dressed in black and/or yellow. We also encourage you to come in costume as "the future we need"!
