May 18, the U.S. Trade Rep, Robert Lighthizer, gave congress official notice of the president’s plan to renegotiate NAFTA. Under the terms of Trade Promotion Authority (fast track) the official negotiations would begin 90 days from May 18. So the clock is ticking and it’s ultra-important that we the people let our opinions be known. The corporations are well-represented in the Trump administration but let’s not forget Donald Trump rode to victory on his campaign promises to repeal NAFTA.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was negotiated behind closed doors with hundreds of official corporate advisors, leaving civil society and affected communities out in the cold. When NAFTA was negotiated it was radically different than past trade deals, which typically focused on traditional trade matters - like cutting tariffs. Instead, most of NAFTA’s terms granted new powers and privileges to multinational corporations, by way of the Investor-State Dispute Settlement provision in Chapter 11. That is unacceptable, especially in light of our defeat of the TPP and its hallmark investor provisions.
