DC Solidarity Vigil for Hurricane Harvey

Start: Thursday, August 31, 2017 7:00 PM

End: Thursday, August 31, 2017 9:00 PM

Join us for a vigil of mourning and reckoning at Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's house. Tillerson was the CEO of ExxonMobil and has made his fortune at the expense of climate disasters.

Since Friday, Hurricane Harvey has dumped over 9 trillion tons of water on Southeast Texas, with flood waters still rising. Tens of thousands unable to leave are trapped in their submerged homes, while thousands more are in shelters after losing everything. Meanwhile, ICE agents continue to detain fleeing undocumented residents, even abandoning women and children at a non-functioning bus terminal. Chemicals and fumes from Exxon oil refineries and Houston’s mass petrochemical facilities spew unchecked into residential neighborhoods. The disaster wrought by Harvey is not natural; it is a manmade disaster perpetrated by fossil fuel CEOs and shouldered by black, brown, immigrant, disabled, and poor Americans.

Unfortunately, Harvey isn't a standalone event. Right now, several more climate disasters has claimed thousands of lives in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sierre Leone. The climate crisis is inseparable from our moral and political crisis.

At a time when our government has failed to act, and is now run by the very culprits of the climate crisis, it’s time for the people to #ShineALighton those responsible and show up for our sisters and brothers in Texas. In DC, we have unique access to one of the villains: Secretary of State and fmr. Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson. Starting at 7pm, DC residents will convene at Mitchell Park and march two blocks to Rex’s home in Kalorama. From there, we will hold a vigil, hear speakers from Sunrise Movement, Hip Hop Caucus, Rising Hearts, and 350 DC, and raise funds for community organizations on the ground in Texas. If you’re upset and outraged at the reality of another Katrina and Sandy, please join us. NOW is the time to talk about the systemic injustices that made this hurricane a human catastrophe.

We will be collecting donations via cash and venmo at the vigil. We will also provide candles. Feel free to bring signs.

If you prefer to meet us at Tillerson’s house at 7:30, the address is 1826 24th St NW. (Located to the northwest of Dupont Metro Station).
