Discover Geology by Transit: East Bay Faults
Start: Sunday, September 17, 2023•11:00 AM
End: Sunday, September 17, 2023• 2:00 PM
Tour some of the finest and most interesting geological features of the Bay Area without getting in a car.
Join Seamless Bay Area and Dr Austin Elliott of the USGS for a car-free tour of the Hayward Fault in Fremont. Learn how planning for transit and other infrastructure has been influenced by geological hazards, and tap into a wealth of resources to continue exploring on your own. We'll meet at Fremont BART station, take the AC Transit 216 bus to the Fremont Central Park community center, where Dr Elliott will take us through some of the local geological features. For those who wish, we'll continue south to explore some interesting infrastructural features, before making our way back to BART on foot.
Logistics
We’ll meet on the northeast concourse of Fremont BART station, near the covered walkway, around 11 am. Coming from the SF direction, there’s a train arriving at 10.40 am and another at 11 am; from the San Jose direction, there’s a train arriving at 10:47 am. However you’re getting there, please arrive before 11:15 am (or be prepared to make your own way to Fremont Community Center, where the geo-magic begins).
Surfaces are either pavement or park grass/lawn so any comfortable walking shoes should work. It may be warm, so hats, sunblock and water bottles are advised. There are drinking fountains throughout the park and along the route. There are also public restrooms in the park.
This is the first of two tours of regional geology by transit: be sure to also check out the San Francisco tour on September 30!
Fremont BART station and AC Transit buses are accessible. The Fremont Central Park community center is accessible. The optional additional tour south from the community center may present some challenges for those with reduced mobility.
