DSA-LB Local Convention: SOCIALISM IS THE SOLUTION

Make Your Voice Heard! Register for the DSA LB 2025 Local Convention!

Our Local Convention is an all day event where we vote on proposals brought forth and worked on by members across the Chapter! As a chapter member your participation is essential as it will impact the work the chapter does for the next year.

This year our convention will take place at the Youth and Movement Education Center (2217 E. 6th St) on Saturday April 12th, from 9a-5p.

Then, after a long day of debate, join us immediately afterwards for a social from 5:00-7:00p to unwind and get to know your comrades better!

Not sure what Convention is? Check out this explainer!

Registration

Please pre-register for Convention to help us plan out the space, resources, and operations for the day. You are required be a Member in Good Standing as of April 5th to be eligible to vote and participate in debate.

Check your membership status with this tool: proof.dsausa.org

If your membership has expired, or you're not a member yet please join here: dsausa.org/join

*Anyone who pre-registers will get a free drink ticket at sign-in for the social.

**When you RSVP, include your name and the email you use for your DSA membership so we can verify your membership status.

Virtual Attendance & Proxy Voting

Democracy is practice so it's important that if you can be there, you take part in Convention. This allows you to hear arguments from your comrades, share your point of view, and vote with that knowledge.

While this is much easier in person, if you can't be there throughout the day, we offer a hybrid option. Please check off "Virtual" attendee as part of your registration and after your membership status is verified, a link will be sent to you prior to Convention.

If you cannot participate at all the day of Convention for whatever reason though, you may request to provide a Proxy Vote to a fellow Member in Good Standing who will be in attendance and can vote for you so that your voice can be counted. The person you confer your vote to must a) consent to vote on your behalf, b) be a Member in Good Standing, c) be in attendance physically on the day of Convention to hold multiple vote cards.

Please register and request a proxy vote so we can verify your membership status.

Instructions will be provided via email to those who request a proxy. Per our bylaws, any individual member may only hold up to 2 proxy votes.

What are we voting on?

Our Local Chapter Convention is an annual meeting of the entire membership of DSA-LB that deliberates and votes on the organizing priorities of our Chapter. Unlike a regular GM, this meeting revolves around the consideration of member-submitted resolutions for:

  • Chapter-wide Campaigns - year-long campaign that engages multiple Committees/Working Groups focused on a particular widely-felt issue
  • Modifications to the Chapter Bylaws - changes to the internal rules that govern our Chapter's operations

NOTE: Proposals must have at least 2 Co-authors who will step in to co-chair the campaign if passed and 10 Members in Good Standing as sponsors. Bylaws amendments require signatures from 10% of the general membership to be agendized.

If you're interested in submitting a proposal, visit the Proposal Submission Form for more details and instructions.

For 2025, a Bylaws Advisory Working Group was formed to provide recommendations on possible bylaws changes. With that in mind, if you're interested in internal operations changes, please attend our next BAWG meeting or email info@dsalb.org to find out more.

We'll use Robert's Rules for deliberation and voting Convention. If you aren't sure what those are, check out our basic overview video on our YouTube page.

Location Information

The Youth Movement and Education Center is located in a former church at 2217 E. 6th St. Though it's a relatively nondescript building, you can see the Long Beach Forward logo from the 6th Street side. Follow the signage to the back of the building for the entrance to the Convention hall.

There is a small lot with first come, first serve parking at 621 Dawson St. (around the corner). You may park in any space not numbered 1-4 (these are reserved).

Street parking is typically available, but it is in a mostly residential neighborhood in Long Beach so...do with that information what you will.

Bus Routes:

  • 91/92/93/94 - 7th and Dawson stop (1.5 blocks away)
  • 21/22/23 - 7th and Cherry (2.5 blocks away)
  • 151 - 4th St and Junipero (2.5 blocks away)
