Resiliency in Action in the Age of Climate Extinction!

The Resiliency Working Group and the Ecosocialist Working Group of the Portland Democratic Socialists of America are co-sponsoring a virtual panel discussion on these challenges, February 19th from 10 to 11:30 AM Pacific Time. The panel will feature as the keynote speaker Ashley Dawson, author of People’s Power: Reclaiming the Energy Commons. The event will also feature DSA members from Texas, Louisiana, and Oregon chapters speaking to their experiences organizing and implementing mutual aid and relief projects in the face of winter storms, hurricanes, and wild fires brought on by climate change.

DSA Chapters across the US are taking on roles in responding to climate extinction disasters- disasters that are now unfortunately the norm. If the past few years are any indicator, as members of the largest socialist organization in the US, we’ll be faced with crises around energy and climate extinction regularly, until we can build a movement large enough to change conditions.

There are two major factors to consider: what we as socialists can do now to be in solidarity and offer mutual aid; and what can be done long term to reduce climate extinction crises.

This is a great opportunity to share between chapters what was effective and essential to the resiliency and mutual aid work, and connect it to the environmental exploitation of marginalized peoples, often forced to live in the cancer zones, the flood zones, the economic sacrifice zones.
