Easter Saturday beach picnic and protest for climate action
Start: Saturday, April 20, 2019•11:00 AM
End: Saturday, April 20, 2019• 2:00 PM
Aucklanders love our beaches, coastline ecology and wonderful weather
But if we don't action soon, we face the irreversable melting of our polar ice caps
A metre sea level rise will result in more frequent and broader coastal flooding, more extreme weather, forced international migration, flooding of Pacific Islands, and destruction of irreplaceable ecology.
In New Zealand, the Insurance council estimates $22 billion worth of essential public services and private property will be affected by 2100.
The irreversible melting of sea ice will eventually result in 50m sea level rises, potentially runaway climate change, and an unrecognisable planet.
Help pressure the Auckland council to declare a Climate Emergency
Media stories on their own aren't getting the change we need fast enough. We don't have time to wait. It’s time for serious, non-violent action that is potentially arrestable. (There's nothing to say we can't have fun and dance to music at the same time.)
We’ll need non-arrestable support and will have a family-friendly space at the beach.
The action is at Mission Bay Beach for a number of reasons:
-
It’s already had increased flooding,
-
It’s one of the first places to be affected by sea level rises in Auckland, and
-
Tamaki Drive, next to Okahu Bay, isn't a safe road for the many cyclists who enjoy riding around our eastern coast.
(Ok, it’s also a beach and an awesome play ground.)
What to bring
Friends and family, lunch and good vibes.
For our protest (and the swim afterwards) we’re going with a water-theme. Here are some ideas:
-
Swimming clothes: togs, wet suits, or if you want to be creative dress up as a mermaid etc,
-
Props: snorkels, goggles, boogey boards, surfboards, kayaks etc. (Bikes are welcome too!)
Be creative!
Please don’t bring banners and placards, we have our visual messages sorted!
How it will work
Meet behind the old Police Booth near the Mission Bay intersection at 11 am.
The action will start right on twelve noon.
This action is part of the International Week of Extinction Rebellion and on the New Zealand Day of Rebellion. See other actions in Aotearoa New Zealand here.
