Event specific details:

FINAL UPDATE!!!

There is a rumor going around we will get suspended for the protest, they can. Not. Suspend. Us. It would get them sued immediately. You will ONLY get an unexcused absence!!

Specific location is the sidewalk and grass on Saginaw in front of the cafeteria near the road on the Dow High side make sure you are ready to be at the location and ready to raise your voice at 10:00-10:17. Please leave class quietly after announcements to account for transition time, and return through the front doors at 10:17 when the protest is completed. Please do return to class, or it will look like an excuse to skip if you do not and reflect badly on all of us. It is very likely we will be marked absent but that is essentially the worst they could do legally unless you are over your ten days of absences, and either way if you are really concerned, and you can, have your parents excuse you! Know however that many colleges have promised if you get in trouble for the protest they won't count it against you if that's a worry! Please make sure you are on the sidewalk and grass only.

Wear all orange and black (colors for movement)  to show solidarity. Brownie points if you wear an orange shirt with passive political words about gun control on it. There are event sponsored shirts here if you wish to purchase them:

https://www.womensmarch.com/youth-shop

but there are also many other wonderful places selling shirts like these.

There will be extra safety provided by the police.

Women’s March Youth EMPOWER is calling for students, teachers, school administrators, parents and allies to take part in a#NationalSchoolWalkout for 17 minutes at 10am across every time zone on March 14, 2018 to protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods. We need action. Students and allies are organizing the national school walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship.

Students and staff have the right to teach and learn in an environment free from the worry of being gunned down in their classrooms or on their way home from school.

Parents have the right to send their kids to school in the mornings and see them home alive at the end of the day.

DEMAND CONGRESS:

+ Ban Assault Weapons Ban and High Capacity Magazines

+ Expand Background Checks to All Gun Sales

+ Pass Federal Gun Violence Restraining Order Law

+ Fund government research on gun violence

+ Promote Safe Storage

We are not safe at school. We are not safe in our cities and towns. Congress must take meaningful action to keep us safe and pass federal gun reform legislation that address the public health crisis of gun violence. We want Congress to pay attention and take note: many of us will vote this November and many others will join in 2020.

Join us in saying #ENOUGH
