Face the Climate Risks!

Start: Wednesday, March 12, 202508:00 AM

End: Wednesday, March 12, 202510:00 AM

Join us outside this important national PLSA pension Investment conference at this key moment in time. The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in collaboration with climate scientists have just issued a damning report on climate change risk assessments currently used by policymakers and pension funds.

In introducing the paper, Sandy Trust, Lead author and IFoA Council Member, said:

You can’t have an economy without a society, and a society needs somewhere to live. Nature is our foundation, providing food, water and air, as well as the raw materials and energy that power our economy. Threats to the stability of this foundation are risks to future human prosperity which we must take action to avoid.

“Widely used but deeply flawed assessments of the economic impact of climate change show a negligible impact on GDP, rendering policymakers blind to the immense risk current policy trajectories place us in. The risk led methodology, set out in the report, shows a 50% GDP contraction between 2070 and 2090 unless an alternative course is chartered.”

The objective of the action is to engage with delegates as they arrive to alert them (by leafleting and conversations) to this report and the resulting need for swift divestment from fossil fuel companies.

To attract attention, there will be singing (Protest in Harmony) and dancing (Discobedience) and unique visual elements to get across the urgency of the report’s call to action.

A pre-action zoom event will be held on Wednesday 5th March at 6pm to give a briefing on the content of the actuaries’ damning report and on the action. The zoom link will be shared if you RSVP to this event (click on 'Click here to view event details' in the email you receive to find the link).

This non-disruptive action is being organised by Divest Lothian, XR Edinburgh & Lothians and Friends of the Earth Scotland.
