The 1978 film directed by Norman Jewison and starring Sylvester Stallone. Stallone plays Johnny Kovak, a Cleveland warehouse worker who becomes involved in the labor union leadership of the fictional "Federation of Inter-State Truckers.” The movie is loosely based on the Teamsters union and their former President Jimmy Hoffa.

Over the past several years too many children have lost their parents; too many spouses have lost their husbands and wives; and too many families have been torn apart by fires, explosions and releases in the oil refining industry.

This has to stop.

When this round of contract negotiations started, we sent our bargaining committee to the table with the industry to win life-saving safety improvements to make sure that every day we are able to come home to our families the way that we left. The industry has stonewalled us, refusing to bargain over key issues and failing to provide our union with key information on the issues on the bargaining table. Left with no other option, we were forced on an unfair labor practice strike.

We are fighting for safe refineries, for fair contracts and to make sure that at the end of the day we are able to come home to our families the same way we left. We are fighting for our families.

This week, striking oil workers around the country are planning Family Day activities at their local union halls, picket lines or in their communities to remind us all of what we are fighting for.
