Fight Poverty Not The Poor Long Island Action

The New York State Budget is an expression of our state’s values and priorities - and sadly the 2019-2020 budget proposals continue to prioritize a failed status quo over the 50.5% of New Yorkers who are poor and low-income. This budget continues to under-invest in public services, maintains New York’s first-in-the-nation inequality, fails to fix our regressive state and local tax system, and continues to direct our tax dollars to for-profit companies with no accountability. On March 18, the New York Poor People’s Campaign will take action across the state, showing that the poor, activists, and faith leaders of all races and in all regions are united in demanding our state government change course and prioritize ending systemic racism, poverty, militarism and ecological devastation.
We will assemble in the park next to Carvel’s at 801 Carman Avenue in Hempstead for a short orientation and training, then march .7 miles up Carman Avenue to rally at the JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER, which is behind the Nassau County Family Court at the corner of Old Country Road and Carman Avenue in Westbury. We will hold a rally in front of the Nassau County Juvenile Detention Center, with signs and banners proclaiming "Youth Belong in Schools Not Jails" and "Education Not Incarceration," "Strong Communities Make Jails Obsolete." The rally will begin at 3:30.
We will gather on March 18th to march in solidarity to the Juvenile Detention Center, which houses children as young as 10-years-old—children who should be in school but who instead have been thrown into the school-to-prison pipeline. We will hear speakers who have been personally impacted by our criminal injustice system; a speaker who works with children in our woefully underfunded schools to try to keep them out of the school-to-prison pipeline; and activists who can tell us more about our criminal justice and educational systems on Long Island and in New York State. You will hear how the State’s funding impacts poor people and people-of-color disproportionally; and we hope that you will be motivated to join us as the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival works to change the moral narrative in our society and right the wrongs perpetrated on the majority of us by the power elite currently controlling the pursestrings.
