Fight the Right, Build the Left: The Election & What’s Next

Start: Thursday, November 07, 2024 7:00 PM

Join the NYC Democratic Socialists and Jacobin Magazine for an open discussion of the 2024 election—how we got here, what has happened, what we still don’t know, and what we need to do. The event will open with brief remarks from panelists to help us get our bearings, and then all participants will be invited to share their thoughts, worries, and recommendations for action. Whatever the results, working class people have our work cut out for us to get to a society that works for us not the millionaires and billionaires. How do we do it?

Panelists include:

  • Phara Souffrant-Forrest (Assemblywoman of the 57th District)
  • Bhaskar Sunkara (Jacobin, Co-founder and editor; The Nation)
  • Sumaya Awad (Adalah Justice Project; editor of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction)
  • Eric Blanc (Rutgers University; Jacobin Contributing Editor)

The event begins from a troubling set of realities facing the working class today. America is faced by a rising far-right movement dedicated to destroying unions, bringing back child labor, banning abortion, turning working people against each other by stoking racism and xenophobia, drilling coal and oil until oblivion, and overturning elections as they attempted to do on Jan 6. This fascist movement has been enabled by a feckless center unwilling to enact an arms embargo against Israel’s genocidal campaign against Gaza, raise the minimum wage, guarantee healthcare for all, create free public college, eliminate the wildly undemocratic Electoral College, drastically reform a captured Supreme Court, make housing affordable by creating new public and social housing, and guarantee childcare for all. It will take a movement of ordinary working class people to make changes that work for us. How can we get involved for the changes to come? Where can we devote our energy that’ll really make a difference for the rest of us?

NOTE: In-person room capacity is nearly reached and we encourage online attendance.
