Film Discussion: The Movement and the Madman

The Movement and the "Madman" (2023) is a feature documentary directed by Stephen Talbot. The documentary covers the 1969 showdown over the war in Vietnam between the peace movement in the United States and President Richard Nixon and National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger. Based on interviews with antiwar activists, historians, and former Kissinger aides, the film shows how two enormous demonstrations in the fall of 1969 pressured Nixon to cancel what he called his “madman” plans to drastically escalate the war, including threats to use nuclear weapons.
On Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at 7pm, we will host a discussion of the film with a panel including:
- David Hartsough, Quaker peace activist who was very active in the anti-Vietnam War movement,
- Producer/Director Stephen Talbot, an Emmy, DuPont and Peabody award-winning filmmaker who has produced, written or directed more than 40 documentaries. His Frontline films include The Best Campaign Money Can Buy, Justice for Sale and News War: What’s Happening to the News. He directed the PBS history special, 1968: The Year that Shaped a Generation. Talbot also served as the editor for Frontline World: Stories from a Small Planet, and the senior producer of documentary shorts for Independent Lens. As a student at Wesleyan University, he made his first documentary film about the November 1969 anti-war protests in Washington, DC.
- Executive Producer Robert Levering, a journalist who has written dozens of articles and authored eight books about the corporate workplace. He coauthored Fortune magazine’s annual “100 Best Companies to Work For” article, and founded Great Place to Work Institute, a global research and consulting firm. He was on the New Mobilization staff for the Nov. 15, 1969, demonstration and was a staff organizer for other national antiwar actions..
