Grad Teach-in For Survival

Start: Thursday, March 21, 202406:00 PM

Graduate workers at UTK are fighting to survive! As rents and expenses are rising while stipends stay the same, it's harder than ever to make ends meet as graduate workers. Join us on March 21st, 6:00pm in the Art and Architecture Building (AAB) room 111 to attend a teach-in to learn more about how recent stipend increases from the Chancellor are not enough! Let's demand more.

Did you know that?

  • 55% of grad stipends fall below the minimum cost of survival in Knoxville, and 100% of graduate stipend minimums are still far below a living wage, even after the recent raises
  • Many of the lowest paid graduate workers on campus saw little to no raises at all!
  • Hundreds of graduate workers are unpaid over summers despite often being expected to continue performing the writing and research that makes UTK work! Many are even barred from picking up summer jobs to make ends meet!
  • Graduate workers who are forced to take family or medical leave lose their health insurance AND stipend when they are most vulnerable.

There are so many gaps and inadequacies that persist for graduate workers, and many may even be unaware of them until it's too late. It's time to arm ourselves with knowledge about what life is really like for grad students, and how we can fix it!

Join us at the Teach-In for Survival to hear graduate workers share their stories, air their frustrations, and educate one another about how we can not just survive, but thrive. We must come together and demand better!
