Hallam Citizens’ Climate Manifesto | A clean energy revolution
Thursday 10th June, from 5:30 - 7pm on Zoom

Tackling the climate and ecological emergency will require a complete decarbonisation of our society and economy. Enacting a clean, green energy revolution will be a key part of this.

As well as energy-saving reductions, such as housing retrofits and improving the quality of buildings, an energy revolution must include rapidly phasing out all fossil fuels and scaling-up investment in renewable energy production. Sheffield must also see a large increase in renewable energy production if we are to meet our local climate targets.

Producing energy locally would provide an opportunity for the people of Sheffield to have a democratic say over the energy we use. The UK has seen a large increase in decentralised, community-based energy projects, like Bristol City Council’s Avonmouth Wind Turbines, a council-owned wind farm which powers energy for over 5000 Bristol homes a year; and West Suffolk Council’s solar farm which has created more than £4 million over the past three years which it has invested back into public services.

Shifting to local, community-based renewable energy would provide an opportunity to create good green jobs in Sheffield, and to heat homes and workplaces across the city in a more sustainable way. Groups and campaigns in the city and across the country are already working to transform our energy systems and create an alternative fit for the 21st century.

At our next Hallam Citizens’ Climate Manifesto event we are going to discuss how we can build on these movements and build a clean, green energy revolution in our own city.

We will be joined by:

  • Luke Wilson of Sheffield Renewables, a volunteer-led social enterprise developing community owned renewable energy in Sheffield

  • Steve Shaw of Power for People, who campaign for the UK to rapidly transition to 100% clean energy and for this transition to benefit local communities

  • Joe Cullinane, Leader of North Ayrshire Council, who have recently approved a council owned solar farm project which will generate 34% of the Council's energy needs and reinvest £13million back into the community.

So please join us on Thursday 10th June at 5.30pm-7pm, where we will hear from these speakers before breaking out into discussion groups to come up with our own plan for a clean energy revolution in Hallam.
