Join Hand in Hand for book club! Our book club is for everyone—read the whole book, a few chapters, or even just a few pages. You'll meet Hand in Hand members and friends from around the country and have a chance to connect for the first time or deepen your friendship.

We'll be reading Lucia Berlin's critically acclaimed short story collection A Manual for Cleaning Women, a New York Times Book of the Year in 2015. The Times writes, "What [the characters] all have in common is their rawness, as in knuckles rubbed raw, exposed. In one story, a man in a nursing home, a double amputee, screams constantly of the pain in his legs. The nurse tells him to hush — it’s only phantom pain. “Is it real?” the narrator asks the nurse, who shrugs. “All pain is real.”

We'll gather to discuss how these stories help us understand our own lives, the lives of people who work in our homes, and people in our communities. We'll discuss the relationship between our organizing as employers with the broader domestic worker movement to take a critical look at how we are aligned and where we have room to grow.
