Hands Across the Sand, Folly Beach/Charleston

Start: Saturday, May 17, 201411:30 AM

On Saturday, May 17, come join hands with fellow Charleston-area folks as we say "NO" to dirty fuels and "YES" to clean energy!

On May 17, communities around the world will gather at their treasured places to draw their line in the sand and say "NO to dirty fossil fuels and YES to clean energy" as part of the 5th annual Hands Across the Sand day of action. On the Atlantic coast, this statement is particularly timely as the Obama administration is moving to open the Atlantic coast, from Delaware to Florida, to offshore oil and gas exploration with the end goal of drilling

We will gather to make the statement that Folly Beach and our coastal environment is more important than the short-sighted plans to expand dirty fossil fuel production, and in coordination with events happening all over the world, ask President Obama and local officials to reject the multitude of risky fossil fuel projects that threaten our communities and destabilize our climate, including offshore drilling, seismic offshore exploration, and the Keystone XL pipeline.

We will have a press conference, featuring comments from Folly Beach Mayor Tim Goodwin and other local leaders at 11:45 am and join hands at 12:00 noon, making a line as long as possible, drawing our line in the sand against risky energy choices. Please walk or bike if possible, arrive early (especially to allow time for parking, etc.), and bring signs.

Come promptly, because the event will be over by 12:15 pm, when we will disperse to enjoy our clean, beautiful beach! There may an after party somewhere in town, but details are to be determined.

Join hands! Join us!
