Health Care Town Hall - Oppose the American Health Care Act

Start: Saturday, June 17, 2017 2:00 PM

End: Saturday, June 17, 2017 4:00 PM

Join Rep. Keith Ellison and Rep. Brenda Lawrence at The Church of the New Covenant for a rally to Save Our Health Care! Democrats from around the state will be in Detroit on Saturday for their annual convention and we need to remind them to stand up for health care and oppose the American Health Care Act (AHCA)

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and other Republican extremists in Congress passed a new, damaging health care bill that strips health care from about 24 million people, raises premiums for millions by 20% and gives a tax break to the super-rich, while taxing workplace health benefits of working people.

This bill that passed the House eliminates protections for people with pre-existing conditions. EPI research shows that Trumpcare’s cuts to Medicaid and insurance subsidies would drag down job-growth by more than a million jobs by 2020, and even more thereafter. Their research has shown that this job loss would occur in every state and the vast majority of Congressional Districts.

EPI has also shown that out-of-pocket costs like premiums, deductibles and co-pays would rise by a whopping $33 billion per year if the House plan was passed by the Senate. These costs would rise largely because key regulations forcing better behavior from health insurers―that were part of the Affordable Care Act―would be stripped away. Insurance companies can now charge people with cancer, diabetes and other illnesses tens of thousands of dollars more for care they need to survive.

We need a health care plan that expands coverage for everyone, not one that cuts it.

Mitch McConnell is working on a secret Senate bill that they hope to pass with only 51 votes by using budget reconciliation. There will be little public debate, no public hearings and we may not see the actual contents before the Senate votes.

We need to tell senators that this is the wrong thing to do for families who will be left without access to the doctors and medicine they’ve come to rely on since the Affordable Care Act passed.

We demand health care NOT corporate welfare.
