Help WWU Divest from Fossil Fuels!
Start: 2025-09-21 00:00:00 UTC Pacific Daylight Time (US & Canada) (GMT-07:00)
This is a virtual event

As part of our efforts to support renewable energy on this first global SunDay of action, Western Washington University’s Students for Renewable Energy (WWU SRE) club invites you, the Bellingham community, to join us in taking action.
For the last decade, WWU SRE has led the campaign at Western as part of the global fossil fuel divestment movement, pressing our university to sever ties with fossil fuels and reinvest in a sustainable future. Last spring, the WWU Board of Trustees (BoT) adopted a historic policy ensuring the university itself would not invest in fossil fuels. This was a major win after more than a decade of student organizing.
But one key piece remains: The Foundation for WWU & Alumni, which manages the University’s $144.2 million endowment, has not yet adopted a similar policy. Without this step, Western’s investments remain tied to fossil fuels.
We thank the Board of Trustees for their leadership & action and ask them to hold the Foundation accountable to its pledge. Western must ensure that all of its investments reflect our values of sustainability and social justice.
Join us in calling for full fossil fuel divestment and investment in a sustainable future.
To take part, print out this postcard template. On the front of the card, you’ll find SunDay movement’s half sun logo, which we ask that you decorate, color, and personalize as you wish! On the back, share why divestment matters to you and why Western’s future must be fossil-free.
Together, let’s send the Board of Trustees postcards that celebrate their progress while urging them to hold the Foundation accountable to its pledge and ensure every part of Western’s investments reflects our values.
For more information on the WWU BoT's recent action, see the Cascadia Daily article. Here is the newly updated BoT Socially Responsible Investing webpage.
Thank you, WWU SRE

Dear Western Washington University Board of Trustees,
Thank you for your decision to divest Western from fossil fuels at your last April board meeting. I ask that you now hold the WWU Foundation accountable to their pledge to create a similar policy, one that aligns with the university's values, mission, and commitment to sustainability and social justice as you have now done...to not only divest from fossil fuels, but invest in a sustainable future. I care about this because
Sincerely,
