This year is the 20th anniversary of the Living Wage Foundation and its campaign to ensure every worker earns a Real Living Wage!

What is the Real Living Wage?

The real Living Wage is based on the cost of living and is voluntarily paid by over 7,000 UK employers who believe a hard day's work deserves a fair day's pay.

In April 2016 the government introduced a higher minimum wage rate for all staff over 25 years of age inspired by the Living Wage campaign - even calling it the ‘national living wage’.

However, this wage is not calculated according to what employees and their families need to live. Instead, it is based on a target to reach 66% of median earnings by 2024.

The real Living Wage rates are higher because they are independently-calculated based on what people need to get by. That's why we encourage all employers that can afford to do so to ensure their employees earn a wage that meets the costs of living, not just the government minimum.

Inspired to win your own Living Wage campaign?

Citizens UK is hosting a 4-part series across Thursdays in May and July, as part of our free, online, Learning Thursdays series.

Following the '5 Steps to Social Change' organising framework, this series will give you a theoretical and practical tool-kit for joining a pre-existing Living Wage campaign or even launching your own new one!

In addition to hearing stories from leaders and Organisers who have run successful Living Wage campaigns, we will provide each attendee with a handbook. You will be able to fill this in throughout the training and build your campaign piece by piece.

This series is open to anyone who wishes to attend, but it is expected that everyone who comes to the training puts their learning into practice in a real live Living Wage Campaign.

Registration is for the whole series, including all four sessions detailed below:

  • Part 1: Organise! Thursday 20th May - 16:00-17:30
  • Part 2: Listen and Strategise. Thursday 27th May - 16:00-17:30
  • Part 3: Act and Negotiate. Thursday 17th June - 16:00-17:30
  • Part 4: Evaluate. Thursday 15th July - 16:00- 17:30.
  • Part 5: Follow up & celebrate. Thursday 9th December - 16:00 - 17:30

**Please note: The usual timings of Learning Thursdays have been extended by 15 minutes for this series. Each session is now 16:00-17:30. Please be on time for a prompt start and stay for the entire duration of the session.**

Register by filling in your details and you will receive the Zoom link for the series. Please remember to tell us which Citizens chapter you are affiliated with.

We look forward to seeing you there!
