JESPA's Restorative Practices Training for Paraprofessionals

Start: Thursday, May 30, 2019 8:00 AM

End: Thursday, May 30, 2019 3:00 PM

JESPA is teaming up with the district to provide this unique opportunity to paraprofessionals.

Context
Restorative practices (RP) are a philosophy, not a curriculum or program, that focuses on building positive relationships and providing opportunities for community members to take responsibility for their behavior and their lives. At the heart of restorative practices is the belief that we are all in this together, that we are a community.

Jeffco Public Schools recently received a grant through the Colorado Department of Education to support district-wide implementation of restorative practices. Through this grant, the Office of Student Engagement was able to bring on a team of three specialists to support our schools and staff with training and implementation assistance.

Logistics
Lunch and compensation for your time will be provided!
A follow-up email will be sent once locations are known.

What to Expect
We will start our day exploring restorative practices as a philosophy to ground ourselves in why this is a necessary shift in the way we address behavior and conflict in our schools.

Once we have a basic understanding of the philosophy, we will dive into some concrete practices, including:
● Proactive strategies to build relationships and prevent challenging behavior
● Responsive practices to support students in reflecting on challenging behavior
● Strategies specific to the many roles we know our paraprofessionals play in our buildings.

Target Audience
If you are a paraprofessional who monitors recess and lunch, pushes into the classroom to provide support, pulls small groups of students, provides coverage for classroom, leads specials classes, this training is for you.

Simply put, this training is for any adult who interacts with young people and would like fresh ideas as to how to connect and build respect as well as address mistakes and missteps in a productive manner.
