Prof. Eicke Weber will speak online on

The role of solar energy in a

decarbonized global economy

Prof. Weber will discuss solar energy, more specificially the global 80-100% RE scenarios based on solar and wind plus storage, solar as lowest-cost electricity quickly approaching 1ct/kWh, the need for green hydrogen from solar and Wind for the decarbonization of Steel and concrete production, and the reasons why this economically so sensible fundamental transformation of our energy system does not come fast enough: the subtle but very effective resistance of powerful stakeholders, the old energy economy!

Prof. Weber serves currently as President of the European Solar Manufacturing Council ESMC. He has a very distinguished career. Prof. Eicke R. Weber, former director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and Vice President of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES), was awarded in 2019 the SOLAR FUTURE.TODAY Visionary Influencer Award in the category Yearly Lifetime Achievement Award.

Prof. Weber describes his researcdh as follows:

The goal of my research today and my professional activities is to contribute to the rapid transformation of our global energy system to sustainability, based on the efficient use of finally 100% renewable energy. This transformation is not only urgently needed to safe us from the most horrible consequences of climate change, but it is as well economically the right thing to do, securing an inexhaustible and low-cost energy supply from the sun, wind, and other renewables for the world. I do expect that our research results in Berkeley, at ISE Freiburg, and in Singapore help to obtain lower-cost, reliable renewable energy supply. With my engagement in the public sector I try to counterbalance a bit the strong and well-endowed forces of stakeholders of the old system, who prefer nuclear and continued use of fossil energy - Billions of $ are at stake, so these forces are strong and diligent!
