Please bring non-perishable food item donations that will be given to a nearby food program for low-income seniors.
President Trump and Speaker Paul Ryan are joining forces to dramatically cut Food Stamps/SNAP benefits and expand and harshen work requirements for people who qualify for the program. Estimates are that 2.6 million people will be thrown off it as a result, and those who remain on it will get less.
Trump and Ryan want to cut $28 billion in spending for Food Stamps/SNAP over the next decade. They want to take $17 billion of that to create a new cumbersome and underfunded work requirement program to be run either by states or for-profit companies. They want to use the other $11 billion to help pay down the $1.5 trillion deficit they created under their new tax law that mostly benefits large corporations and the ultra-rich.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, aka Food Stamps) helps over 40 million low-income people pay for food and groceries, including 3 million New Yorkers. 80% of them live below the poverty line. Most people on SNAP are children, seniors, people with disabilities and debilitating illnesses, full-time family caregivers, parents of young children, students, military veterans, low-wage and temporary/seasonal workers, those who’ve recently lost a job, and unemployed people who live in areas with high unemployment and few available jobs. The vast majority of able-bodied people on SNAP already work, and only use it for less than a year.
