This is a virtual event

This is the eleventh hour for the Environmental Human Rights Amendment. Join us virtually on Monday March 7 for a Letter Writing Blitz. MDEHR will share a brief email template and key points for you to craft your personal emails to your state representatives, House and Senate leadership. Personal emails and calls carry a lot of weight with our elected officials. This is the time to raise the sense of urgency to pass the Environmental Human Rights Amendment.

In the House, the only way to ensure the amendment moves out of committee is to build up the pressure and noise with the leadership of the House and with state delegates. If we, the people, bring enough pressure in the House, we can help make this happen. Urge your Maryland state representatives and Speaker Jones to protect each person’s right to a healthful environment and give Maryland voters the chance to ratify HB596, the Environmental Human Rights Amendment.

In the Senate, we need your voice to build up support to ensure we have the floor votes we need to pass this amendment. Urge your Maryland state senator and Senate President Ferguson to give Maryland voters the chance to ratify SB783, the Environmental Human Rights Amendment.

Despite the challenges that are distracting all of us, Maryland residents and our youth can’t wait yet another year when it comes to our climate and the health of the environment in Maryland. We are already dealing with increased flooding, severe storms and extreme heat in our state. While a constitutional amendment will not erase all problems, it will create a constitutional obligation for the state to enforce and support environmental laws and regulations that ensure a healthful environment for all Marylanders, including future generations. It will require the state to be accountable for the environment’s health and the health of its citizens that depend on it. This is the systemic change we need now.
