For most of us, councils are the level of government we have the most interactions with day-to-day. From the potholes, delays, and air quality on our commutes, to our parks, streets, and housing; the building blocks of our homes and communities are the domain of our councils.
But up and down the UK, councils are broke or breaking down, and with them a whole host of important social and democratic spaces and institutions.
As part of Compass' 2024 Local Elections campaign, we’re hosting this webinar to highlight some of the myriad leaders, projects, and campaigns making change in local government.
We're asking them what’s actually happening and what’s possible with local government, showing what difference it makes having progressives leading councils, and how cooperative pluralism encourages better progressive policy outcomes and consultative practices.
The format will be a series of lightning talks from:
- Peter McFadyen, author of Flatpack Democracy and Mayor of Frome 2014/15
- Head of Regional Economic Change at Centre for Local Economic Strategies, Charlie Winstanley
- Matthew Brown, leader of Preston Council
- Georgia Gould, leader of Camden Council (TBC)
- Humanity Project, Lachlan Ayles
- Dr Gill Hughes, activist and academic working on community participation and engagement
- Rob Uhlig, Programme Director of the Bude Climate Partnership
- Neelam Heera, We’re Right Here
Then we will finish with a quick round of questions.
