Looking Forward and Federal: Women's Rights from Congress to Grassroots, April 14th

Start: 2022-04-14 20:00:00 UTC Eastern Standard Time (US & Canada) (GMT-05:00)

This is a virtual event

During a time when the safety and health of women across the country is under threat, the conversation about what actions need to be taken to protect women's rights is more important than ever. That is why Congress must act to ensure the Equal Rights Amendment is signed into law by  the archivist as the 28th Amendment.

We will be joined by women's rights advocate Congresswoman Caorlyn Maloney, human rights lawyer, feminist and author of "Ordinary Equality", Kate Kelly and Co-founder of VoteEqualityUS and the great, great granddaughter of Maggie Walker, Liza Mickens.  Join us for a discussion on why the ERA has yet to be ratified, where we are now, and what is next.

First elected to Congress in 1992, Carolyn B. Maloney is a recognized progressive national leader with extensive accomplishments on financial services, national security, the economy, and women’s issues. She is currently Chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform and former Chair of the Joint Economic Committee, the first woman to hold both of these positions. You can learn more about Representative Maloney here.

Kate is a humans rights lawyer committed to legal advocacy & education for women & other marginalized groups. In 2013 Kate founded a group called Ordain Women to advocate for gender equality in the Mormon Church. She is a nationally-known advocate for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, and Host of the podcast Ordinary Equality. She has a forthcoming book also called “Ordinary Equality” about the history of the women who have shaped the U.S. Constitution. Pre-order the book here and read her full bio here.

Liza is Co-founder, Intern Programs Director and Official Spokeswoman of Vote Equality US and the great, great-granddaughter of Maggie Walker. Liza advocates for a more complete narrative of the story of suffrage and the fight for gender equality in America. In addition to representing her family's historical legacy for over a decade, she has been speaking out on gender equality since 2018 and now leads the VoteEqualityUS intern program. A 2019 graduate from JMU, she has a keen interest in the fashion industry which she balances with her work to change the world for future generations.

This is part of an ongoing series, "Road to the Midterms: Looking Forward and Federal," where we will be joined by members of Congress, voting rights activist and state leaders for in-depth discussions on important pro-democracy legislation and efforts that you can help support as we gear up for the 2022 midterm elections.
