Open to both Citizens UK staff and leaders, particularly those from Catholic communities
Earlier this year, Pope Leo XIV published his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, addressing the safeguarding of the human person in the age of artificial intelligence. It's a document that speaks directly into the world we organise in: it calls for technology to serve the common good rather than corrode it, and warns against a 'post-humanist' drift toward treating some people as second-class, subordinate to the interests of elites who see themselves as superior.
For those of us rooted in broad-based community organising, that's not an abstract theological point - it's the argument for why our work matters.
The encyclical insists the choice before us isn't between technology and humanity, but what kind of humanity we choose to be. That's a question about power, relationships, and the common good - the very 'building site' Citizens UK works in every day.
Join us for a conversation exploring what Magnifica Humanitas offers organisers, leaders, and Catholic communities grappling with AI, work, dignity, and power in their own institutions and neighbourhoods.
Speakers:
- Dr Maria Power - Oxford Citizens leader; Fellow of Blackfriars Hall and Deputy Director of the Las Casas Institute for Social Justice
- Fr Angus Ritchie - TELCO leader; Executive Director of the Centre for Theology & Community
