Map Your Community SWMO

Start: 2021-07-21 18:30:00 UTC Central Daylight Time (US & Canada) (GMT-05:00)

This is a virtual event

Hosted by Show Me Integrity Board Chair Deb Burgess, Show Me Integrity Board Member Benny Fong, and the League of Women Voters of Southwest Missouri.

Too often, Missouri’s new district map lines have been drawn by lobbyists and politicians without real public input and without truly honoring our communities.

We are working to change that.

Missouri’s current system is driven by lobbyists, politicians, and political consultants, who are appointed by Republicans and Democrats. The panels look out for political parties—but who is looking out for voters?

Communities of interest are regions or neighborhoods with significant shared interests that deserve consideration from their elected representatives. But this has been one of the hardest to handle of all the priorities when drawing news maps—if you show up at a meeting to say your community matters, how does that information make its way to the line-drawers?

Share your voice on Wednesday, July 21 to ensure your area is fairly represented. We'll teach you how to:

  1. Use an easy online tool to identify places that are important to you, that make up your “community of interest.”

  2. Identify locations that could constitute a proposed Senate and House district that makes sense for your area.

Once you're done, your maps will be reviewed and compiled by a nonpartisan team into a community map of the whole state, which will be proposed to the decision-makers who have the authority to pass the maps into law.

We need volunteers in southwestern Missouri to submit as many maps as possible. RSVP to our virtual event today >>
