March 23: Defeat the "Let Them Eat Cake" Commission's Agenda

Start: Friday, March 23, 2018 1:00 PM

Four legislative committees are hearing testimony on the Commission on Fiscal Stability and Economic Growth’s recommendations, many of which seek to erode working families' economic security. The most egregious proposals put forward by the panel — made up primarily of current and former corporate CEOs — include:

  • Eliminating collective bargaining rights over health and pension benefits for state employees;
  • Weakening binding arbitration laws to further advantage municipal and school board employers;
  • Slashing public services delivered by state employees through privatization and other means; &
  • Raising the sales tax from 6.35% to 7.25%, shifting a greater share of the state budget’s revenue burden on working families.
These attacks are aimed directly at union members and their families — the last line of defense for Connecticut's shrinking middle class. Lawmakers need to hear that, despite being wrapped in a glossy report by business elites, it's wrong to balance budgets on the backs of teachers, nurses or probation officers.

(Please note this hearing was originally scheduled for March 21 but was moved back to March 23 due to inclement weather.)
