March '22 ILM Coastal Cleanup

Start: Saturday, March 19, 2022 9:00 AM

End: Saturday, March 19, 202211:00 AM

We have moved the cleanup location to the area near Greenfield St and 9th St. This area is a place of residence for several houseless folks and the city of Wilmington is using the cleanliness and appearance of the area to justify involving the police. Keeping this area clean improves the chances for these people to continue to live in the only place they can call home and avoid interactions with the police.

Cape Fear River Watch will be installing a garbage can in this area in order to help sustain our efforts over time.

We will meet at the parking lot across from the listed intersection and will be assisted by a member of the community who has a strong relationship with the houseless residents.

Ocean and waterway trash ranks as one of the most serious pollution problems choking our planet. Far more than an eyesore, a rising tide of marine debris threatens human health, wildlife, communities and economies around the world. The ocean faces many challenges, but trash should not be one of them. Ocean trash is entirely preventable, and data you collect are part of the solution. Keeping our community clean not only makes the area more comfortable for everyone who lives nearby, but also for the world as a whole.

The Wilmington and UNCW Democratic Socialists of America chapters are sponsoring a cleanup effort on March 19 to help protect our local environment and see firsthand the side effects of consumerism and our unsustainable economy. Come help make Wilmington a more beautiful place and meet some new folks who share your passion for the environment!
