Jose Ruiz-Benites, Legislative Assistant for Assembly Member Sade Elhawary, will join us on Thursday, February 20 at 10:00 am PT on Zoom.

Assemblymember Sade Elhawary is an educator, organizer, and advocate for social justice who represents the 57th Assembly District, including the communities of Exposition Park, South Los Angeles, and Downtown Los Angeles.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, the Assembly Member is the eldest daughter of Egyptian and Guatemalan immigrants. At Community Coalition for over 12 years, she was mentored by Mayor Karen Bass and City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson and served as a youth organizer. Assembly Member Elhawary holds a bachelor’s degree from UCLA and a master’s from Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Assembly Member Elhawary serves on many committees including Appropriations, Human Services and Public Employment and Retirement. Her first bill introduced is AB 37, which would expand the workforce of those who provide mental health services to homeless people.

Mr. Ruiz-Benites will share the Assembly Member's legislative goals for the current session and will discuss with us, our climate and environmental priorities.
