“Flint is a public health disaster. But it was Dr. Mona, this caring, tough pediatrician turned detective, who cracked the case.”—Rachel Maddow

The AFL-CIO is delighted to host Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, Flint water crisis whistleblower, Time magazine’s 100 most influential people, TEDMED speaker and “pediatrician turned detective,” as she releases her new book, What the Eyes Don’t See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in an American City.

Flint was once the embodiment of the American Dream. The birthplace of General Motors Co. A city of possibilities. A hotbed of union activism.

But then came disinvestment, unemployment, privatization, racism, poverty, violence, the decline of unions, crumbling schools and, ultimately, poisoned water.

With its citizens at risk of lead poisoning and worse, Flint needed a hero. And the city found it in a courageous pediatrician from a union family who spoke truth to power and saved countless lives in the process.

Please join us for a reception to follow.
