Multi-Faith Vigil for the Earth: Our Common Home

Start: Sunday, January 22, 2017 5:00 PM

End: Sunday, January 22, 2017 5:30 PM

This peaceful, family-friendly vigil, sponsored by the People's Climate Movement (www.pcmny.org), in collaboration with Greenfaith (www.greenfaith.org), will take place during inauguration weekend. People of all faiths -- clergy and lay people -- will join our spirits and set our intention to work for a clean energy economy that works for ALL people and addresses all forms of inequality and injustice.

The event details:
1. Please be heading toward the center of the Brooklyn Bridge, from either side, on the pedestrian walkway by 4:45 at the latest. As you approach the bridge from either side, you will pass by a volunteer at the towers who will hand you an electric tea light (please bring your own if you have one). Then proceed to the section of the bridge spanning the East River where we will line up in a row along the rail of the pedestrian lane (not the north-side bike lane!).

2. At EXACTLY 5:00 PM we will begin 5 minutes of SILENT "holding the space", during which we will meditate or pray in silence.

3. At 5:05 we will begin 5 minutes of SIMULTANEOUS, OUT-LOUD prayer, with everyone reciting a spoken, sung, or chanted prayer from their own faith tradition (in the language most comfortable). In this way, we will blend our prayers together as we stand together, sending our collective prayers out into the world.

4. At 5:10 we will all lift our lights to the sky and end with whatever one word each person finds to bring the vigil to a close. At that point, you are invited to remain in prayerful attendence for as long as the spirit moves you!

As you can see, this will be a very short, very poignant ceremony, so we urge you to be on time (or even early) so you don't miss it. It's a bit of a hike from any of the subway stations to the center of the bridge (see below for travel details).

We will be gathered in shared recognition that the protection and healing of the earth is our sacred responsibility. Together, in collective strength and prayer, we will prepare to face the social and political headwinds to come. Please join us at sunset on January 22.
