John Dear considers Kathy Kelly the greatest living peacemaker in the United States. For forty years, she has been speaking out, traveling the world and taking action against war and nuclear weapons. She was imprisoned for an anti-nuclear action in the early 1990s, and then started traveling regularly to Iraq to speak against the US war and bring North Americans to meet Iraqis. She coordinated the Fellowship of Reconciliation delegation of Nobel Peace Prize winners led by John Dear to Iraq in 1998.

Later, she started to travel regularly to Afghanistan, and coordinated the trips of John Dear, Mairead Maguire and Shane Claiborne to Kabul. She is an author and well-known public speaker. She and John were part of the Creech 14, the first protest against the US drone warfare system, at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada. She has been nominated many times for the Nobel Peace Prize. She is the founder of “Voices in the Wilderness” and “Voices for Creative Nonviolence,” the author of Other Lands Have Dreams and lives in Chicago.

In this session, she will share stories about her friends in Afghanistan who have suffered under US bombs and drones, as a way to reflect on Jesus’ commandment to “Love our enemies.” Together, we will reflect on what it means to live the Beatitudes, to be peacemakers, and to follow the nonviolent Jesus while our nation wages war around the world.

“It’s always a challenge to look ahead and imagine what stories might be relevant and needed a few months from now,” Kathy writes. “If it’s possible to think about ‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice’ and ‘Blessed are the meek,’ maybe those beatitudes would allow for stories about people seeking refuge from war and those who arrogantly perpetuate it.”

The session will last one and a half hours; cost: $30.
