NEA Rhode Island is teaming with Lorén Spears of the Tomaquag Museum for two professional development opportunities centered on cultural competency.

Tomaquag Museum, led by Lorén Spears, lead consultant, will provide Cultural Competency training with a specific lens on local Native American history and culture. The workshops will incorporate historical facts, increase awareness of perspectives, bias, stereotypes and misconceptions. It will also include strategies for applying new knowledge to their work. The purpose is to support educators and broaden their perspectives, understanding, and promote a positive attitude toward diverse cultures to ensure a proactive, positive and inclusive classroom and school environment.

Goals
  • Acknowledge historical trauma & educational disproportionality
  • Incorporate learning into educational practice
  • Integrate local Indigenous content across the curriculum
Participants are encouraged to engage in both offerings for an in-depth and complete understanding of the topic. Link to first offering: https://actionnetwork.org/events/pd-cultural-competency-an-indigenous-view/
