Peace & Justice Conversations: The Wind Revolution Off Our Shores

Start: Monday, December 06, 2021 7:00 PM

THE WIND REVOLUTION OFF OUR SHORES: Recent Developments and Opportunities
for Military Conversion

There is an energy revolution gaining steam off our shores, and it doesn't involve more drilling for or shipping of climate-killing fossil fuels.   Offshore wind has potential for providing for most of our future electric power needs, especially in New England, if only we keep moving forward to build the necessary infrastructure.

Long-time energy activist and Seacoast NH resident Doug Bogen will give an overview of recent offshore wind developments for our region and discuss the many benefits offshore wind provides for a clean and sustainable energy future. He will also touch on the opportunities that offshore development provides for military facility conversion, specifically in our region, as well as actions we can take now to get New Hampshire in gear to take advantage of this energy revolution.

Doug Bogen has been an environmental organizer and advocate for almost four decades, focusing on grassroots, citizen advocacy efforts and community-based solutions to our most challenging environmental issues. He is currently director of Seacoast Anti-Pollution League in Exeter, focused on watch-dogging the Seabrook nuclear power plant, promoting renewable power alternatives and clean up of superfund toxic waste sites at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He also serves on the statewide steering committee of 350 New Hampshire, an affiliate of the international climate action group 350.org and is a founding member of Seacoast Peace Response. He previously worked with Clean Water Action’s NH program from 1991 to 2009, serving as state program director much of that time. He worked on issues of combating climate disruption, toxic contamination, particularly mercury and military waste, drinking water protection, cleaning up the state’s old fossil-fueled power plants and coastal water quality. He lives in Barrington and has been a resident of New Hampshire’s Seacoast region for three decades. Bogen holds a masters degree in Science and Environmental Education from Cornell University.
