Solidarity Action with the Puerto Rican Diaspora for Independence

Start: Tuesday, November 09, 202110:00 AM

Please join MDC DSA in standing in solidarity with PIP and the Puerto Rican Independence movement this Tuesday, November 9th.

The Vaello-Madero case in the U.S. Supreme Court represents the injustice of colonial life in Puerto Rico. This comes as José Luis Vaello-Madero received Supplemental Security Income as a resident of New York so he would be able to pay for his living expenses. When he decided to move back to his homeland of Puerto Rico, Congress denied those benefits on the basis that he no longer lives in a state.

We stand with PIP as supporters of Puerto Rican independence in regarding this instance a violation of their civil rights to live and to decide for themselves how the people in their own land can live. No Puerto Rican should ever have to suffer by not being able to live comfortably in their own home. This is the injustice they will continue to suffer as long as the colonial rule of the United States is upon them.

The court case will be heard at the Supreme Court on November 9th. We plan to start to make our presence known at 10 AM. There will be pro-statehood activists there and the PIP DC along with other groups in solidarity will make the struggle against imperialism faced by the Puerto Rican people known.
