Join activists across the country to collect data on plastic pollution in U.S. National Parks! Register your cleanup at any national park from July through September to contribute to a report that will reveal the materials, items, and brands of waste found across our national parks. These results will be used to support and advise legislation that keeps harmful single-use plastic out of our protected spaces.

If that's not reason enough, all participants will also be entered to win an America the Beautiful National Parks Pass and two tickets to Jack Johnson's All at Once concert in Los Angeles on October 1.

Upon registration, you will receive an email with instructions on how to do a TrashBlitz, but here are the basics:

  1. Open the TrashBlitz research platform on your mobile device, or use the physical data card (remember that you may not have great service in the park!).
  2. Select “Plastic-Free Parks” as your cleanup event (make sure to choose the appropriate national park in parenthesis), and register your cleanup information.
  3. Now it’s time to clean up and tag your trash! It’s best to work in pairs, with one person collecting trash while the other inputs data. This visual guide will help with identifying types of plastic.
  4. Take photos and share your cleanup on social media! Tag @5gyres and use the hashtags #PlasticFreeParks and #TrashBlitz.
  5. Review your data, and hit submit. You will automatically get an email with your raw data, and you will receive a copy of the final report when it's published in Fall 2022.
