Come join our LA Forward Schools and Communities First Kickoff Event where we’ll write postcards to our elected officials, asking them to endorse the California Schools and Local Communities Funding Act, a November 2020 ballot measure that will restore over $11 billion per year to California’s schools, community colleges, health clinics, and other vital local services by closing California’s commercial property tax loophole.

The measure protects homeowners, renters, agricultural land, and small businesses, while reclaiming the billions of dollars in tax breaks to millionaires, billionaires, and big corporations that have drained our schools and communities of funding for the last 40 years. Help us reinvest in our Teachers, our Children, our Communities, our Future!

We will have snacks, postcards, and pens as well as activities to entertain the kids. Bring your friends, family, and kids. We’ll also have information for other ways to get involved for those interested.

You probably know that parents and communities overwhelmingly supported the recent teacher’s strike, with teachers calling for smaller class sizes, higher pay, more money for classroom supplies, more school nurses, etc. What you may not know is that our school’s lack of funding can be traced back to the 1970s when a proposition was passed allowing property owners to pay taxes on the value of the property when it was purchased. This was meant to keep seniors from losing their homes, but in reality it means that large corporations like private golf courses, gas stations, movie studios, etc. are paying almost nothing in property taxes despite the current value of the property being worth billions. All of that adds up to enormous loses in money that should be going to schools. The Schools and Communities First Act will make taxation equal for all corporations by requiring corporations to pay taxes on the current value of their property. It won’t affect homeowners, small business with property under $2 million, or residential property of any kind (so won’t affect renters). It will create $11 billion annually that will go to local communities with the majority tagged to go directly to schools and the rest going to community mental health, libraries, parks, etc. It’s a win-win and you can make a huge impact by helping get your elected officials on board.
