News Conference to Urge Gov Cuomo to Sign Bill to Improve CUNY Funding

Start: Wednesday, July 22, 2015 1:00 PM

CUNY students and faculty, together with elected officials, will hold a news conference urging the governor to sign a bill to protect the quality of education at CUNY and SUNY. The bill, S281a/A5370a, passed the Legislature with near unanimous support. It clarifies articles of law known as “maintenance of effort” provisions, which aim to stabilize state funding for the two public university systems. Basic university operating costs were left out when the maintenance of effort provisions were passed in 2011. Since then, tuition-hike revenue has gone to fill big holes in the CUNY budgets, instead of to improve education and student services.

The maintenance of effort (MOE) legislation was passed by the Legislature with near unanimous support in June. In the next week it will move from the Assembly to the Governor. We need the Governor to sign the legislation into law.

On July 22nd we will be holding a press conference to draw public attention to the importance of the legislation. The press conference is part of a statewide campaign to encourage the Governor to sign the legislation. We anticipate a number of elected officials, student leaders, labor leaders and others to be in attendance to express their support for this essential investment in CUNY.

Please join us and RSVP so we know who's coming.
