'Defend NY's Hometown Paper: An Evening with The Daily News Union'

Start: Thursday, February 13, 202507:00 PM

End: Thursday, February 13, 202509:00 PM

The Daily News has been a household name and a New York institution for more than a century. When something happens in this town, New Yorkers hear it from us.

But we need your support.

In 2021, Alden Global Capital – the private equity firm that’s earned the moniker “destroyer of newspapers” – bought the Daily News. Since then, our staff has dwindled, our newsroom is gone, and the budget continues to shrink.

This town might have 8 million stories – but it’s down to roughly 60 of us left to cover them.

Meanwhile, the Alden bigs make out like thieves. They sold our Jersey City printing plant for more than $90 million last year. But our readers get nothing in return. The management of what was once America’s highest circulation newspaper can’t even be bothered to hire an Albany reporter, or cover the courthouses in Queens or the Bronx. Journalists who leave are rarely replaced. And we’ve been working without a metro editor for two-and-a-half years.

We’re still putting up a fight. This past year alone, reporters at the Daily News have been among those who’ve led the coverage of the sweeping probes into Mayor Adams. We’ve uncovered abuse at Rikers, snafus in the subways, and probes into crooked cops – all while Alden ties our hands behind our backs.

It doesn’t have to be this way. On Thursday, February 13, we’re gathering the Daily News community – readers, current and former Newsers, and any New Yorker who cares about the truth behind their news – to talk about the future of this storied paper.

Come join us at KGB Bar in the East Village at 7 p.m. We’ll be joined by former Daily News scribes Denis Hamill, Michael Daly and 'Tom Robbins, NYC labor leaders and elected officials, all gathered to defend the Daily News.
