Five years ago, New York State passed landmark climate legislation that would quickly transition us off of fossil fuels, calling for the state to get 70% of its energy from renewable resources by 2030. In 2023, recognizing that the transition wasn’t moving fast enough, New Yorkers passed the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA), which unleashed the publicly-owned New York Power Authority to build as much renewable energy as necessary to meet that goal.
Thanks to BPRA, NYPA can rescue our climate goals while creating thousands of green jobs, lowering utility bills, and shutting down highly polluting peaker plants. But so far Governor Hochul and NYPA leadership have not committed to building enough public renewables to ensure that we meet CLCPA mandates and gain economic and health benefits for New Yorkers.
Our state faces a choice–build public renewables and set the example for the entire country or fail on our climate goals and deprive New Yorkers of jobs, lower bills, and cleaner air. So on September 24th, New Yorkers are rallying at NYPA headquarters in White Plains to demand that Hochul and NYPA unleash the People's Power and build 15 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030.
