What does it mean to be a citizen? Why does it matter how we define categories like “White”, “Black”, “Hispanic and/or Latino” regarding immigration and citizenship? Over the next few weeks we hope to examine how racial categorization became instrumental in defining who is and is not a citizen. Moreover does the purpose of this reading group is to analyze how whiteness continues to shape our understanding of citizenship and belonging, particularly in a time of high racial anxiety and resentment towards those perceived as “Other.”
