Restorative Justice In Action or Restorative practices is a social science that studies how to improve and repair relationships between people and communities. The purpose is to build healthy communities, increase social capital, decrease crime and antisocial behavior, repair harm and restore relationships. This series will visit different professionals who are doing work in restorative justice and the successes, challenges, and best practices that they have experienced.

This session will speak with Dr Lukas Carey from Australia. Dr. Carey completed his Doctorate in education and has worked in the field for most of his career as a coach, teacher, trainer and educator. While filling a role in Australian local government he was charged with and convicted of receiving secret commissions and served time in prison. During and since Lukas’ incarceration, he developed a strong interest in the role that previously incarcerated people have in the development of policy and procedure in the justice system concerned with education and post-release employment. He is a strong advocate for the importance of Lived Experience in education and in reducing the rates of returning to prison and international incarceration rates. Dr. Carey speaks at many conferences focused on reentry and education, as well as hosts his own podcast (www.lukascarey.com.au)

Objectives:
1) Awareness - raise awareness of trauma principles and restorative practices
2) Reflection - provide space for reflection and inquiry
3) Inspiration - helping to identify how to apply our respective energies better or different in the field
