Sept 20 Albany Global Climate Strike - Hochul: Hands Off the Climate Law!
Start: Friday, September 20, 2024• 2:00 PM
In 2019, New York State passed their landmark Community Leadership and Climate Protection Act (CLCPA.) And in 2021, 70% of New Yorkers voted to add the right to clean air, water, and a healthful environment to New York's constitution. The people of New York have clear priorities on averting the worst of climate change, and preserving the next generation's future.
Yet, during this same time, Governor Kathy Hochul:
- Vetoed the Tropical Deforestation-Free Procurement Act, which would have barred NYS from purchasing any goods linked to illegal deforestation.
- Attempted to include false solutions, such as chemical recycling, into NYS' Carpet Recycling law.
- Spent the last budget session trying to gut the 2019 Climate Law by changing key measuring methods around methane.
- Flopped on congestion pricing,
- And is currently trying to gut our Climate Law, once again.
We must call on Governor Hochul to get her priorities straight: climate cannot wait, and no amount of politicking the accounting within New York State's climate laws will change the reality of rising waters, unpredictable temperatures, and life-threatening storms and floods that everyday New Yorkers face. The only thing which will change this reality is decisive climate action.
Please join youth on Sept 20 to tell Governor Hochul to take her hands off the CLCPA, and to sign the Climate Superfund into law now. Now, more than ever, youth need reason to believe in the promises New York has made to its residents, and to see hope in their future.
We will rally outside of the Governor's Mansion on the hill at 2PM. [Speaker and musician details TBA.] Fridays for Future t-shirts and stickers will be free for attendees, and RPI Sunrise will have spare hand-painted signs.
Climate protests will happen across the world on September 20, 2024 as part of the Global Climate Strike called for by Fridays for Future USA and Fridays for Future International.
