Welcome to our Socialist Night School series session, Why the Working Class?

What is the working class/what are the classes? Why does the working class have the power to change society? Where does its power come from, and what is it capable of? What is the role of unions, workplace struggle and rank-and-file unionism in changing our minds and our world? Is class struggle central to challenging oppression of all forms? We also include an advanced reading by Marx and Engels about the economic/material relations of classes within capitalism.

  1. Michael Zweig, "Six Points on Class" (15 pages)
  2. Vivek Chibber, "Why the working class?" (6 pages)
  3. Ellen Meiksins Wood, "Why Class Struggle Is Central" (3 pages)
  4. Sara Nelson at the DSA National Convention 2019 VIDEO (30 min) OR read the Transcript (14 pages)
  5. Marx and Engels, "Wage, Labour and Capital" (22 pages)

(Don't worry, the readings are not obligatory. If you don't have time to read them, you'll still get something out of the presentation and the discussion.)

The presentation and discussion will be online. You will receive a reminder email with a conference link the day of the meeting.
