Social Justice U: WIC101

Start: Friday, August 21, 201511:00 AM

VICPP will host a training followed by lunch and an informal conversation on how WIC helps to close the gap in health outcomes, cognitive development and more between WIC-eligible children and non-WIC eligible populations. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a training for your organization, contact Claire Sadeghzadeh at Claire.sadeghzadeh@vdh.virginia.gov.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) helps pregnant women, mothers, infants and young children stay healthy and eat right during times of important growth. Richmond City WIC currently provides nutrition education, supplemental foods, referrals to community partners and health care providers and breastfeeding support to roughly 5,300 women, infants and children each month; however, we only serve 50% of eligible pregnant mothers and children between 1 – 5 years old.

In an effort to provide more families with the support they need to grow and thrive, Richmond City Health District is hosting 30-minute trainings for faith-based and community leaders, physicians and organizations serving WIC-eligible populations to encourage mothers to enroll in WIC during their pregnancy and remain in their program through their child’s fifth-birthday.
