The Socialist Night School is open to anybody interested in learning more about the ideas and history behind left and socialist movements. Like most STL DSA events, we will be conducting these virtually for now.

In the second week of STL DSA's Summer 2021 Socialist Night School, we look at a selection of readings that explore the relationship between capitalism and race. The readings and discussion for this week will take both a historical view on this topic as well as root it in contemporary debates.

Recommended Readings

The first reading is an excerpt from Ralph Bunche's A World View of Race from 1936. This short 12 page chapter, “The Device of Race in World Economic and Political Conflict,” provides a nice, basic, approachable explanation of the relationship of race to economic exploitation as well as some insight on the history of race in the US.

The second reading is by Touré Reed who makes a concise contribution to the contemporary race vs. class debate. This short Jacobin article crams in a bunch of history on black political thought and organizing in addition to laying out a very clear position on this debate that we can examine and discuss in class.
